HOW TO PLAY PICKLEBALL
the very basics.

1. the serve
2. back-and-forth

Every point starts with a gentle underhand serve, hit diagonally across the court. Then both sides have to let the ball bounce once before hitting it in the air. After that, you’re free to volley, rally, and hit the ball as you please.
Pickleball is all about hitting back-and-forth. You’re goal is to hit it over the net and into the other side of the court without missing. It’s fast, fun, and way easier to pick up than tennis.
3. the kitchen
That space near the net? That’s the kitchen. If you’re standing in it, you can’t hit the ball out of the air: no smashes from up close. So hang back until the ball bounces, then step in and keep the point alive.

HOW SCORING WORKS

3
Games usually go to 11 points, and you have to win by 2
Only the serving team can score points
If you win the rally while serving, you get a point. If you lose the rally, you don’t lose a point—you just lose the serve.

which means...
DINK
A soft, short shot that lands in the kitchen. Slows the game down and sets up better plays.
MATCH
A series of games played to determine the overall winner.
LET
When the serve hits the net but still lands in the right spot. It’s a do-over.
KITCHEN
The no-volley zone close to the net. You can step in, but don’t hit the ball in the air while standing there.
RALLY
The back-and-forth part of the game once the ball is in play.
SIDE OUT
When the serving team loses the ball and the other team gets a chance to serve.
